Join Stearns in Collecting Care Kits for Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week.
The Holidays can bring out the best in everyone—from canned food drives at work, to toy collections at schools, to building projects in your community. It’s wonderful to see people looking out for one another, and it can be tempting to think we’ve got big problems like hunger and homelessness solved. Unfortunately, we’ve still got a long way to go.
As reported by the National Coalition for the homeless, 43.1 million Americans are currently living below the poverty level and 549,000 are homeless on any given night. It’s estimated that 42 million Americans are at risk of suffering from hunger, with many forced to choose between necessities like buying food, paying rent, or visiting a doctor.
This week, November 11-19, 2017, is National Hunger & Homeless Awareness Week, an annual campaign sponsored by National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness. It’s fitting that the organizations selected the week before Thanksgiving, when we’re all thinking about food and family. However, the week wasn’t designed to make you feel guilty about what you have. Rather, it’s a time to focus on being grateful for that abundance, and sharing it with others. Over the course of the week, college campuses and community organizations across the nation will host events to draw attention to the problem of poverty, and build up a base of volunteers and supporters for local anti-poverty agencies. Here at Stearns Lending, we want to do our part to help, too.
HomeAid for the Holidays
For the second year in a row, we’re partnering with HomeAid to organize our Lending Hands HomeAid for the Holidays Drive. With help from our employees, clients, colleagues and friends, we’re collecting hygiene items like soap, shampoo and conditioner to assemble into Care Kits, which we’ll distribute to homeless shelters across the country. Our goal this year is to collect 3,500 Care Kits—and we’re confident we can do it. We already know we have an incredible network of caring people around us. After all, last year, we set a goal of collecting 2,400 Care Kits, and ended up donating 4,696.
A Care Kit with “Just the essentials” may not sound like much, but to someone without a home, it can mean a great deal. If you donated last year, we’d like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And if you’re inspired to give this year, we invite you to join us. Participating is easy and inexpensive.
From November 11th through December 6th, we will be accepting donations of the following items:
• Bar soap
• Travel-Size shampoo
• Travel-Size conditioner
• Granola bars
Donated items may be dropped off in bins at any Stearns location. You can also mail donations to 750 East Highway 121 Bypass, Suite 150 Lewisville, TX 75067.
We have so much to be thankful for—including people like you. Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for helping out!
