Simple Ways to Get Your Home Summer-Ready

Along with fun in the sun, smart homeowners spend some time getting their house and yard in good shape for the summer. Here’s a checklist of interior and exterior activities that can be hammered out quickly—so you can kick back and enjoy the season sooner.


  • Repair tears in window screens and doors
  • Wash windows
  • Create a “drop zone” for wet swimsuits and dirty shoes
  • Organize leftover school supplies so they’ll be ready in August
  • Teach kids how to do various household tasks
  • Deep clean the fridge and kitchen cabinets
  • Schedule air conditioning service
  • Make sure ceiling fan blades spin counterclockwise, pushing air down
  • Program thermostat to improve efficiency
  • Clean dryer vents
  • Swap out dark toss pillows with light and bright options
  • Pack up the cozy blankets and set out lightweight throws


  • Replace or update house numbers
  • Add a fresh coat of paint to the front door
  • Add water features in the backyard for kids to play during the day
  • Inspect and repair fence (especially if it’s around a pool)
  • Clean light fixtures and replace with bright bulbs
  • Add walkway lighting
  • Replace filter in lawn mower
  • Sharpen mower blades (or have a pro do it)
  • Put air in bike tires
  • Move toys to an easily-accessible area
  • Clean the grill and fill the tank (or buy briquettes)
  • Hose down patio furniture
  • Power wash the siding and patio
  • Set out citronella candles or other bug deterrents
  • Check and clean gutters, downspouts and window wells
